Thomas A. Smith is the son of a Naval Aviator, so he was raised around military aircraft. He grew up in Maine, United Kingdom and Michigan.
After graduating high school, Tom entered the U.S. Air Force as a Visual Information specialist, which is comprised of Photography, Video and Graphic Arts. Being around all aspects of the visual field has given Tom a unique perspective on how to develop his artwork.
With five years left before retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Tom was lucky enough to be selected by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds to manage the Visual Information positions. He remained on the Team until his retirement in 2001.
Immediately after retirement, Tom started to develop his aviation art. He used what knowledge he gained with computer graphics in the Air Force, and used it as a tool for layout. With some pieces, he remains in the digital realm and produces prints from the digital master, and some are moved to board or canvas to be painted traditionally using the digital master as a color study, depending on what the customer wants.
Tom resides in Tucson, Arizona with his beautiful wife Lisa and daughter Elizabeth. He also has a son in college at the University of New Hampshire.
