P-40 E Warhawks of the 343rd Fighter Group begin their dive into a formation of Japanese Mitsubishi GM3 “Nell” bombers and Mitsubishi “Zero” fighters headed for a bombing raid on Dutch Harbor, Alaska. War in the Aleutian Islands came with the additional hardship of severe weather conditions, particularly for air operations. Finding a downed pilot could be dangerous and the climate on land and at sea lessened the pilot’s chances of being rescued in time.
