Robert's latest portfolio features one of the most respected fighter pilots of all time, ‘Johnnie’ Johnson. With 38 victories to his credit, not only was Johnnie the highest-scoring Spitfire Ace of WWII and the most prolific RAF pilot against the Luftwaffe but, in some 1,000 combat missions, he was never shot down, and only once was his Spitfire damaged in action.
The centerpiece of this highly-restricted edition features a detailed drawing entitled
Wing Leader, beautifully portraying Johnnie leading Mk.IX Spitfires of his 144 Canadian Wing out across the Channel as they head out across the Normandy beach-head on the morning of D-Day 6 June 1944.
Continuing the exacting standards set in the series so far, both drawings are once again beautifully presented as Giclée prints, reproduced on museum quality archival papers. What happens next, however, is at the heart of this new series as Robert lovingly hand-finishes each copy to create a truly unique and highly-collectible item.
The process he uses to transform each piece is tantalizing with the delicate application of subtle embellishments and elegant highlights. Every copy is therefore unique and only when Robert is completely satisfied with the finished result, does he personally title and write the captions before signing and hand-numbering each copy.
