Flying C-141 Starlifters, the Military Airlift Command, now Air Mobility command, has for decades supported the activities of the National Science foundation in scientific research on the Antarctic continent. The nature of the climate in Antarctica allows the transport of personnel, supplies and equipment by air to the U.S. base at McMurdo Sound only between October and December each year. In 1988, Keith Ferris was privileged to visit McMurdo and was delighted to find the most spectacular scenery and very curious emperor penguins which inhabit this unusual continent.
