In the spring of 2024 Rick Herter was commissioned by the USAF Viper Demo Team commander, Major Taylor Heister, callsign “FEMA” to create this painting. At the time of the commissioning, the team’s air show jet was being painted at Edwards AFB. Unbeknownst to the public and in secret, the new jet was being painted in the anniversary colors of the original livery from 50 years ago. The striking jet would debut its new colors at a South Dakota Airshow in May of 2024.
In the image of Rick’s exciting painting, Major Heister is putting the Viper through its paces climbing over Edwards' dry lakebed with the famous compass rose clearly visible below. The print is meant to honor all who built, crewed and flew the F-16 over its historic 50 years of service.
