RAF Scampton on the afternoon of 16 May 1943 and Lancaster AJ-T ‘Tommy’ is loaded with the ingenious ‘Upkeep’ bouncing bomb by ground crews of 617 Sqn, in preparation for Operation Chastise.
As a reserve aircraft AJ-T was not fitted with the twin Aldis lamps for gauging the correct height however after nine aborted attempts, Bomb Aimer George ‘Johnny’ Johnson would release their bomb on target, scoring a direct hit on the Sorpe Dam at 00.46 hrs, 17 May 1943.
Few aviation artists come close to Richard’s extraordinary ability with pencil and paint which is why his drawings are highly prized by collectors. Completed in his trademark technique using a mixture of graphite with white highlights on buff colored paper, to create a unique 'sepia' effect, this stunning piece emphasizes the amazing standards which Richard has achieved.
Signature on Remarque Editions only:
Sqn Ldr GEORGE ‘JOHNNY’ JOHNSON MBE DFM - The Bomb Aimer on Lancaster AJ-T 'Tommy' that attacked the Sorpe Dam.
