In the Spring of 1942, Japanese forces succeeded in severing the Burma Road, China's last supply link to the Allied world. In order to continue supplying the Chinese with essential military provisions and prevent their defeat by the Japanese, all supplies would have to be air-lifted over the Himalayas. Flying heavily loaded transport planes over the Hump, airmen of the U.S.A.A.F. and the China National Aviation Corporation would for the next three and a half years, maintain a constant supply of materials to the beleaguered people of China.
