At about 0830 during the initial attack on the various Pearl Harbor facilities targeted by the attacking Japanese, a lone survivor of the devastation at the Ford Island seaplane hangars escaped the carnage and went on the hunt for the Japanese Fleet. Patrol Squadron 23 pilot Lt. James Ogden, with a quickly-picked crew which included VP-23 commanding officer LCDR Massie Hughes, quickly launched PBY-5 #3 and headed at minimum altitude across the Waipio Peninsula towards Barber's Point and the open sea. Their hair-raising escape from Ford Island was successful and culminated in a twelve hour-long patrol, returning at about 2030 and making an uneventful landing in pitch-black conditions at Pearl Island.
