  • This outstanding John Shaw edition is co-signed by Don Blakeslee of the 357th Fighter Group. Blakeslee was in the opinion of many, possibly the finest U.S. Fighter Group commander of World War II. Begining his combat career flying Spitfires in the RAF, Blakeslee went on to command one of the famous American "Eagle" squadrons in late 1941. When the U.S. officially entered the war, these Yanks in the RAF donned new uniforms and became part of the Fourth Fighter Group based at Debden, England. The 4th began flying the huge P-47 Thunderbolt, but at Blakeslee's insistence, soon transitioned to the legendary P-51 Mustang. With the outspoken and often controversial Blakeslee at the helm, the Fourth Fighter Group became the highest-scoring U.S. Fighter Group in Europe, finishing the war with over 1,000 enemy aircraft destroyed.
